Community Comparison Project Share

Image
I decided to view Taylor's community comparison project, as his cover page caught my attention. Taylor was creative with his project and enjoyed the GIFs he inserted on every topic of discussion. He provided a lot of information and covered all of the major points. It was surprising to see the differences and similarities within the school. I live in Lindenhurst, so Copiague is fairly close to me, and it was surprising that the majority of Copiague's student population is Hispanic/Latinos compared to north port. It was nice to see the number of diverse students in the Copiague district. One of the parts that I enjoyed the most was the relationship between students and family that the school had. Both districts enforce the involvement of the community and parents. Since things like this might not always be seen it was nice to see the support both districts had. Considering my experience with my board of ed meeting and my project. Parent Invo...

Home/School

Image
Connecting home and school is important as parents should be involved in their children's work, and should be learning at home too. Sometimes working from home can be difficult since we are comfortable at home. That is where we wind down, so it can be hard to focus. It's essential to be creative and think of ways to incorporate both home and school to refrain from low student performance.       For example, recently, I attended some workshops online that were long. Specifically, the DASA workshop I attended was seven hours long. Now, seven hours is already a long time but not trying to learn in the comfort of your own home can be difficult. The activities have to be engaging to keep everyone attentive to the lesson. Luckily, I had a great teacher for the workshop who constantly broke us out into breakrooms. We even had additional assignments we had to do before the class to present on the day of.  Homework or any kind of work give...

Social Media/Technology

Image
Social media and technology play a big role in our everyday lives. Sometimes even more than we think, but some might disagree. This week's discussion is a little different as I have PowerPoint going into depth about the sources of this topic and my thoughts. This is an ongoing debate and doesn’t expect you to agree with my points or beliefs, but to be open to the consequences and troubles that come with social media/technology. However, as educators, we want to encourage technology in classroom lessons, but it’s very much different when used in an abusive matter. I believe using technology in the classroom is different from social media in the classroom or in general. I hope you understand my thoughts and points as well as educate you on social media/ technology and how it affects their mental and emotional health.     References      Klein, A. Drug Education

Image
For this week's blog, we will be looking at lesson plans and activity finders from the national institute on drug abuse. In particular, we will be analyzing “Mind Matters: The Body’s Response to opioids”. Now, drug abuse is a serious and ongoing crisis we live with and continues to increase rapidly including the number of deaths due to drug abuse. Although this is a sensitive and scary topic it’s important to discuss this with your students as well as your own children, so they’re aware of what to stay away from and to also get help for someone else who is going through drug abuse.    This lesson focuses on grade levels five through nine and provides activity sheets for the lesson. This helps children understand the health effects and risks of dry abuse. Especially considering that opioids are used as medicine for people who are in serious pain like dental surgery, sports injuries, and cancer, but can be extremely dangerous if misused. There are also different nam...

Social Emotional Learning and Mindfulness

Image
The topic of discussion today is social-emotional effects on young students as well as mindfulness and being cautious of your students and future conversations you might have with other people. Growing up we absorb everything and anything we see around us, and sometimes children go through/experience things that cause them trauma for the rest of their lives. We have to be mindful as educators and adults of these children to help and ensure them a better lifestyle and education. As you can tell our keyword during this discussion is mindfulness, and will be going into depth about it while bringing up creative strategies and approaches for your future colleagues, students, and classroom.     To start, there is a Documentary that I watched titled “Room To Breathe”.     Just the title itself moved me because it says so much about what I was going to watch and how I even felt like I needed room to breathe myself. The film is about Marina ...

Poverty/Homelessness

Image
As future teachers, we need to think about if our students are getting the right attention and environment outside of school. Believe it or not, children's living citations reflect on their behavior and performance in school. it’s hard for students to focus when they have to worry about where they are going to sleep that night or how they're going to eat. Homelessness is something I’m pretty sure we have all seen at some point in our lives and to this day poverty and homelessness are still one of the main struggles that we face.      It’s unfortunate to think that others look at you differently if they see you are homeless. They tend to think you’re not a good person when in reality that’s not the case at all. Most students end up in this situation because of their toxic home environment or parents giving them up. In a film called the Homestretch, they show and talk about certain students' stories and the obstacles they have to face. Along with the hel...

Tech Tip

Image
This week's blog is a little different as I have a slide show that my classmates and I did talking about mental health and various disorders that are seen in children and how it affects them. About one in five children in the United States shows signs of mental health disorders (Anderson, 2016). In every school, there are many people that play a big role in seeing these problems and finding solutions but it’s easier said than done. Unfortunately, there is little to no training and not many schools have enough counselors. It would be ideal to bring in counselors and training for teachers to help children succeed. Teachers see their students every day for a decent amount of time too and could spot sudden changes in the child’s behavior and body language. In order to see change everyone in the school must play their part and create a school environment of safety and ensure mental health isn’t stigmatized. The disorder I chose for my slide was Dissociative Disorder which...
